How to choose a SAP module to get certified in.
In this post, I will give you some important factors to consider when choosing a certification path in SAP.
We will go through them one-by-one and then at the end I will give you a tip on a new area in SAP which is promising
to be in demand in the future. This is one SAP niche which you want to consider as it is suitable for newbies looking to
break into SAP.
There are as many SAP modules as there is sand on the beach, really no kidding. I wonder how SAP manages them all
into one family of products without it turning into one big monster. Good news is, if you look through the list of modules
then you will only find maybe 2 or three that you can identify with. This is your first step in narrowing down the options.
Pick a module with a familiar name
The first step is to browse the list of modules and pick 5 or 6 that sound vaguely familiar. The reason why you should pick so many
is that the funnel will get tighter later so we don’t want to restrict ourselves too much yet. So take a look at the modules on the SAP
Education website and if it sounds like something you have done before or would like to do, add it to your list.
Techie or Talkie
Decide whether you want be a technical consultant or functional consultant. Most SAP modules have these two parallel streams
to choose from. The functional guys are more business facing, have to do mainly configuration, writing reports, making presentations
etc. The technical guys get the specs from the functional guys and implement them. They are mostly working on customization projects
as opposed to configuration. So which are you techie or talkie.
Demand
You want to get certified in a module that is in demand. If you choose a module used only by a tiny company in a rural area, so help you God.
The best way to determine demand is to search on job boards and websites of recruitment agencies dedicated to hiring SAP consultants. You will
need to find popular ones for the country you live but in the UK, Jobserve is a good place to start. Monster is also used worldwide so you can try that.
See the number of results, browse through the results themselves and get a feel on how the market is doing. Consultants looking to work in the UK
can check itjobswatch.com for demand figures.
After all this, you will already be able to separate the modules into “Go or No Go” or in this case more appropriately “Do or no Do” categories.
There is a new SAP certification called the Business Process Expert BPX certification. Click here for more info. https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/bpx/education
This has to do with optimizing companies’ business processes to work well with SAP solutions. Why would this be a good field to get certified in?
It is a new field and as such it levels the playing ground for newbies and experienced consultants alike.
It is being heavily promoted by SAP as a solutions to extract better results from SAP solutions.
I will do a post on this later on after I have done more research. But first go ahead and try and choose a module and let me know which one
you did choose.
